Phoenix Award

Going on the theory that hindsight is 20/20, the creators of the Phoenix Book Award decided it was time to look back 20 years and start recognizing those great books that failed to impress the judges of their day. Beginning in 1985, the Children's Literature Association began giving Phoenix Awards to books originally published in English 20 years previous that did not receive a major award at the time of its publication.

Nominations for the award are made by members of the Children's Literature Association and an elected committee makes the final decision. In 1989, the award also began recognizing honor books, though they have not been named every year.

The award itself, a picture of a phoenix, was designed by Trina Schart Hyman, herself a Caldecott-winning illustrator.
