Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award
In 2002, one of Sweden's favorite authors, Astrid Lingdren, died. To honor her memory, the Swedish government formed the Astrid Lingdren Memorial Award, a prize that includes five million Swedish crowns.
The prize is given to a living person who is an author, storyteller, illustrator, or promoter of reading. It recognizes lifelong achievement of works for children that uphold the highest artistic quality. The prize wishes to recognize works that share the humanistic spirit of Astrid Lingdren's works and promote children's rights on a global level.
The prizes are given to any person regardless of nationality. Nominating bodies from around the world nominate people to the committee which selects the winners. The award is administered by the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs.
