Hans Christian Anderson Awards

The International Board on Books for Young People sets out every other year on a monumental task-recognizing the very best in children's writers and illustrators from all those living in the world today.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is the patron of this award, an award that has been likened to a "Little Nobel Prize."

The writing award was first given in 1956 and the illustrator's award has been given out since 1966. Nominations are made by individual chapters of the International Board on Books for Young People. These nominations are considered by a jury of children's literature specialists from around the world.
