Jane Yolen

We appreciate great authors because their voices resonate with us. They tell us stories in a voice which echoes in our heads long after the details of plot, setting, and conflict leave us. Jane Yolen is one such author. She is also a poet and a teacher, two occupations that blend well in her novels.

Yolen has been called the Hans Christian Anderson of America. She writes children's books, fantasy, and science fiction-more than 200 of them. Her writings have garnered her the Caldecott Medal, two Nebula Awards, two Christopher Medals, the World Fantasy Award, the Golden Kite Award, and the Jewish Book Award.

Yolen was born on Feb. 11, 1939 in New York. She was graduated from Smith College and the University of Massachusetts. Yolen also has an impressive list of volunteer and occupational involvements. She's the past president of Science Fiction Writers of America, is on the editorial board of several magazines, was on the board of directors for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and was a founding member of the Western New England Storyteller's Guild.
