David Wiesner

David Wiesner has an unusual claim to fame. He is the wordless author. A long-time art student, Wiesner was the illustrator for such literary luminaries as Avi and Jane Yolen. He has illustrated more than 20 award-winning books for young readers as well as publishing his own wordless stories, many which have become classics. Four of his books have won either Caldecott Honor or Caldecott Medals.
Wiesner, an artist who grew up in suburban New Jersey, is hailed for his creative and original storytelling, storytelling that often takes old subjects and brings a fresh approach to them. Born in 1956, Wiesner later attended and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design. He began working as a freelance illustrator in New York, earning such commissions as a cover for Cricket and book jackets and interior art for various authors.
