Elizabeth George Speare

Elizabeth George Speare started writing late in life, but her words have lasted long beyond her life.

Born in 1908 in Massachusetts, Speare spent her entire life in New England and began writing when her two children were in junior high. Fascinated by a bit of history she'd stumbled across in New England, she began writing historical novels for young people.

Her books have won two Newbery Medals, one Newbery Honor and she has received a Laura Ingalls Wilder Award.

Speare died in 1994.
