David Small

David Small took inspiration from the industrial surroundings of his childhood in Detroit. It was them that he developed a love for drawing-a love that would follow him throughout his career as a children's book illustrator.
Small studied English at Wayne State University. In 1972, he earned a Masters of Fine Art from Yale and taught drawing and printmaking in several different colleges until he could support himself as an illustrator.
Small married children's book author Sarah Stewart and the two of them have collaborated on several works. In 2001, he earned a Caldecott Award.
