Clifford Simak

Clifford Simak, a science fiction writer, frequently drew upon his Wisconsin roots, frequently advocating a pastoral existence and weaving Midwestern culture throughout his novels.

Born in 1904, Simak was a journalist as well as a science fiction writer, working for such newspapers as the Minneapolis Star and Tribune and the Minneapolis Star. He didn't become a full-time science fiction writer until his retirement from journalism in 1976-though by then he'd already been recognized as a Nebula Grand Master. Other awards included three Hugos, an International Fantasy Award, a Minnesota Academy of Science award, two Juniper Awards, a Nebula, and a Locus.

Simak died in 1988.
