Elizabeth Peters

Barbara Mertz, born in 1927, in a small Illinois town, has become one of the country's best-loved mystery writers, writing under such names as Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels. Much like her famous heroine, Amelia Peabody, Mertz is a scholar of Egyptology, studying it at the University of Chicago and earning a PhD by the time she was 23.

Unfortunately, not too many people were hiring women in Egyptology in post-WWII America. She married, had children, and continued to research and write. In the late 60s, she finally found publishers who wanted to purchase her work and her writing career took off from there. She has written 29 gothic/romance suspense novels, 25 mystery/suspense novels, and several archaeology books. Her three main series feature Jacqueline Kirby, Vicky Bliss, and Amelia Peabody.

Mertz uses three pseudonyms to separate the type of writing she does: nonfiction archaeology is published as Barbara Metz, supernatural thrillers as Barbara Michaels, and historical mysteries as Elizabeth Peters (a name derived from her two children: Elizabeth and Peter).
