Larry Niven

When you start listing the masters of "hard" science fiction, there aren't too many names that come up before Larry Niven, bestselling author and creator of the Ringworld series. The universe Niven created, the Known World, has taken on a life of its own as he has allowed other writers to craft stories in it.
Born in 1938 in Los Angeles, California, Niven began his full-time writing career in 1962, with his first published story appearing in a 1964 magazine. By 1966, he'd won a Hugo Award for best short story, the first of several Hugo and Nebula awards that he would earn throughout his career.
In addition to his Known World future histories, Niven has branched out into space opera epics in collaboration with such writers as Jerry Pournelle.
