Jane May

Jane May blames her dog for her career as a novelist.

Jane May - used with permissionShe'd already published several activity kits in the late 80s and had gone on to screenwriting. While her screenplays were optioned, they hadn't yet been made into a movie when she met and adopted Miles on Valentine's Day, 1999. The dog inspired her to write a novel about a relationship from the point-of-view of the canine. The publisher loved it and offered her a two-book contract.

Jane May was born in Connecticut where she lived until she was five. After her parents divorced, she moved with her mom to New York City, where she lives today. At age 9, she fell in love with ballet and went to the Professional Children's School so that she could take daily dance lessons. She eventually performed with the Bolshoi Ballet and the New York City Ballet Company.

From there she went on to study acting, singing, and jazz. By age 17 she had performed in such Broadway productions as an Oklahoma revival and in the original cast of Hair.

She then went on to a liberal arts college followed by marriage. While the dream of writing hatched during college, she would put that on hold until after her divorce. She moved a few times, including several years in Boston where she worked for Boston Magazine and Arnold Communications.

However, she missed New York and when her son left to attend New York University, she followed with her daughter. After working in the corporate world for several years, she quit to become a full-time writer.
