George R.R. Martin
The children who coughed up their pennies to buy classmate George R.R. Martin's
monster stories might have predicted that he'd grow up to be a writer. They
certainly wouldn't have been surprised when he sold his first story, The
Hero, at age 21.
To support his writing habit, Martin took a degree in journalism and taught the trade until he became a full-time writer in 1979. His work focused on science fiction, fantasy, and horror. In 1986, he became a story editor for The Twilight Zone. He then went on to write stories for such series as Beauty and the Beast and Doorways.
In the 1990s, he began an epic fantasy series, A Song of Fire and Ice, which drew him out of Hollywood and back into full-time writing.
