Patrick Marber

London playwright Patrick Marber has paid his dues in the drama business. He's been an actor, director, and stand-up comedian. While working as a comedian, he began writing scripts for the show and other television comedies. His plays have been translated into more than 30 different languages.

Marber says he writes to exorcise his own demons. His first play helped him deal with his own gambling obsessions, while his next work was a pessimistic piece on relationships after he'd determined it was impossible to have an honest relationship.

Marber grew up in the suburbs and used to hang out at the National Theatre, soaking in as much of the environment and works as possible. He began working as a stand-up comic while attending school at Oxford. After college he began writing and rewriting, constantly polishing his works and learning more about stagecraft. Closer was made into a movie starring Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, and Jude Law. Marber's screenplay was nominated for a Golden Globe and a British Academy Award
