Arnold Lobel
Arnold Lobel made animal drawings come alive for children.
His illustrations and stories are some of the best beloved children's books.
Even as a child, Lobel would tell stories to his classmates and illustrate them. He was later inspired by the cartoons. After eight years as a professional illustrator, Harper Row asked him to write a beginning reader for them. Thus were the Frog and Toad stories born.
Many of his books were collaborations with his wife, author and artist Anita Lobel. Those collaborations won Caldecott Honors, Globe/Horn Honors, and were listed as a best book of the year by the School Library Journal.
Lobel died in 1987.
