L'Engle was an avid reader, particularly fond of L. Frank Baum, L.M. Montgomery, and George MacDonald. She graduated from Smith College and took an apartment in Greenwich Village with two friends. It was here that she dabbled in the theater and met her husband.

The couple moved to Connecticut where she began both a family and her writing career. She mostly wrote short stories, though she published a few novels during this time. It wasn't until the family moved back to New York and her husband resumed his acting career that her writing career truly launched. She became interested in quantum physics, an interest that led her to write A Wrinkle in Time, for which she won a Newbery award.

L'Engle has also won a Margaret A. Edwards Award and a World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award.

From that time on she became a prolific and popular novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, and public speaker.
