Ursula K. Le Guin

For the past 30 years, Ursula K. Le Guin has been a giant in the field of science fiction and fantasy writing. She's written 20 novels, more than 100 short stories, 11 children's books, and six books of poetry. She's stretched genre lines to produce fiction both realistic and fantastical and moves easily between prose and poetry.

Ursula K. LeGuin photo from loc.govIn 1929, she was born Ursula Kroeber in Berkeley, California, the daughter of a writer and an anthropologist. After earning degrees from Radcliffe College and Columbia University, she met her husband, a historian, in Paris. She was in France on a Fulbright fellowship.

She is one of the most decorated of authors with extensive literary honors to her name. They include Globe-Horn Book, Nebulas, Hugos, Newbery, National Book Award, Locus, Jupiter, Lewis Carroll Shelf, Gandalf, International Fantasy, Pushcart, James Tiptree, Endeavor, and many reader awards. She's received lifetime achievement recognition from numerous organizations and was named a science fiction Grand Master in 2003. One of her books was even short listed for a Pulitzer Prize.
