Frank Herbert
When it came to massive world building and deep philosophy, Frank Herbert wears the crown of mastery. His complex, multilayer novels continue to be widely read decades after his death. He is best known for his Dune series, which earned him both a Nebula and a Hugo.
Born in 1920, Herbert was a precocious youngster with intelligence and understanding beyond his years. At age 8, he decided he was going to be an author. He was raised in Washington and worked intermittently as a reporter and editor. He was 45 when his first Dune novel was published.
Herbert died in 1986. His son Brian continues to write stories set in Herbert's universe.
