Joseph Heller
What is an author to do when his debut novel is a classic that no one-not even himself-will ever be able to outdo? Joseph Heller took his place among the giants of American novelists with his publication of Catch-22 in 1961. He continued publishing novels intermittently until his death in 1999.
Joseph Heller was born in New York in 1923 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Like his famous creation Yossarian, Heller flew 60 missions as a bombardier in B-25s in North Africa and Italy. Upon returning home and graduating from college, he taught composition and began publishing short stories.
In addition to his eight major novels, Heller has also written stage plays, screenplays, short stories, articles, and reviews.
