John Grogan

John Grogan launched his writing career with parodies of the nuns in his eighth-grade parochial school.

Born in Detroit in 1957, Grogan discovered an affinity for writing that he lacked for all his other subjects. In high school he wrote for the school newspaper and created his own "underground" tabloid that was frowned upon by school authorities.

He then studied journalism at Central Michigan University and went on to work for a small newspaper in St. Joseph where he met his wife. In 1985, he won a public affairs reporting scholarship from Ohio State University where he earned a master's degree. He then won another fellowship, this one from Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

Grogan stayed in Florida for several years and the family was joined by his famous dog, Marley, whom he would later write a bestselling memoir about. Grogan now writes a column for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
