Bette Greene

Bette Greene was born in Tennessee in 1934 and was raised in a small town in Arkansas. Her books focus on what its like to be different in part because she herself stuck out like a sore thumb as a Jewish girl in the American South during the Depression and World War II.

In a recent interview, Greene talked about how she is deeply offended by injustice, a theme that often shows up in her books, especially her book about adolescent homophobia, The Drowning of Stephen Jones.

She married Donald Sumner Greene in 1959 and they now live in Massachusetts with their two children.
