Mordicai Gerstein
Mordicai Gerstein, born in Los Angeles in 1935 and raised amongst pictures by artists ranging from Seuss to Cezanne to Picasso, has always been a man of pictures. Even as a child he drew portraits and comic books, war pictures and
pictures of music. After high school, he studied at Chouinard Art Institute to become a painter. A class in animated cartoons got him a job that took him to New York where he designed characters for television commercials and directed animated films.
Author Elizabeth Levy then asked him to illustrate her books, a partnership that has lasted 30 years. It was that partnership that also inspired him to begin writing his own books.
The author of more than 30 children's book, including the 2004 Caldecott Medal winner, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, Gerstein lives in Massachusetts with his wife, illustrator Susan Yard Harris, and their daughter.
