Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Gabriel Garcia Marquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, is best known for his novel Love in the Time of Cholera, a book selected in 2007 as an Oprah Book Club pick. Born in Aracataca, Magdelena, Gabriel Garcia Marquez (whose full name is Gabriel Jose de la Concordia Garcia Marquez) based the tragic-comic novel on the courtship of his parents.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez is credited with popularizing the genre of magical realism. However, his books often defy easy classification. He'll mix fiction and fact in his books, with characters from one often appearing in another. It is a style that has earned him laurels as one of the greatest writers of the 20th Century and his books have been translated into numerous languages and are read around the world.
The novelist, journalist, editor, publisher, and political activist was raised by his grandparents who had a tremendous influence on his writing life. His grandfather was a major political figure in Colombia and his grandmother told mystic stories and was deeply superstitious. Both of their influences can be seen throughout his novels.
The father of television and film director Rodrigo Garcia, Gabriel Garcia Marquez has seen many of his works cross over into other media. His Love in the Time of Cholera loosely inspired a beautiful Spanish opera called La Florencia del Amazonas. There have also been numerous films made of his books, though few so far have become popular or well known.
