Jack Gantos
Jack Gantos, born in 1955, credits his sister as his inspiration to become a writer. In sixth grade, he read her diary and decided he could be a better writer than she. So writing is what he started out to do.
After a series of mis-education in schools that were underfunded and surrounded by students who didn't care, Gantos began writing children's books with an illustrator friend, Nicole Rubel. Their first success was Rotten
Ralph in 1976. He continued to write, creating books ranging from picture books to juvenile fiction to novels for young adults and adults.
In between writing his books, Gantos teaches about children's literature and writing children's books. He developed the master's degree program in children's book writing at Emerson College and the Vermont College's Master of Fine Arts program for children's book writers.
