Russell Freedman thinks some of the best stories are those that are factual. It's why he's made a living of telling those non-fiction stories to children across the country. Born in San Francisco, Freedman graduated from the University of California. His nonfiction writing first blossomed as a reporter and editor for the Associated Press and later as a publicity writer.

While Freedman writes on subjects ranging from history to animal behavior, biographies have become his niche and the genre for which he is best known. Freedman frequently travels to gather materials for his books, including a trip traveling all across mainland China.

Freedman's more than 47 nonfiction books have won him such awards as two Newbery Medals, a Newbery Honor, a Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, and a Washington Post Children's Book Guild Non-fiction Award.
