William Pene Dubois

William Pene Dubois was born in 1916 in New Jersey to a family of artists. He later studied art in France, the country where he would die in 1993.

Although his book 21 Balloons became his best known work, he also had a standout career doing illustrations. He illustrated books for such well-known writers as Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Roald Dahl.

He began publishing children's books in the mid-30s before becoming a war correspondent during the second world war. Upon returning home, he wrote and illustrated two books which would earn Caldecott honors in 1952 and 1957: Bear Party and Lion, respectively.
