Harry Devlin

Born March 22, 1918 in New Jersey, Harry Devlin created children's books, essays, comic strips, and artwork that entertained readers for decades.

At Syracuse University he majored in illustration and met his future wife, Dorothy Wende Devlin , with whom he would collaborate on work throughout their 60-year marriage. After graduation, Devlin began doing war drawings for Life. As a freelancer he also illustrated pulps, Army manuals, and advertisements.

He served in the Navy during World War II, creating illustrations to help members of the military identify enemy planes. After the war, he began working with Collier's.

Devlin was awarded the Arents Medal for Art and Literature and was named to the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. He collaborated with his wife on a comic strip, Fullhouse (also known as Raggmopp), that was based on the antics of their children-and the characters were named after them as well.

Devlin died at age 83 in November 2001.
