TOMIE DePAOLA

Tomie DePaolo was one of those people who knew early in life what he wanted to do. He decided at age 4 that he wanted to be a writer and painter-and he has had tremendous success in both areas. He also told anyone who would listen that he wanted to tap dance and sing, two other areas that he's done, albeit with slightly less renown.

DePaolo was born in 1934 in Connecticut, where he grew up with his brother and two sisters.

In the past 40 years, DePaolo has written and/or illustrated more than 200 books. He has won such awards as the Caldecott Honor Award and the Newbery Honor Award. More than six million copies of his books have been sold worldwide.

DePaolo now works in a studio in New Hampshire-a renovated 200-year-old barn.
