Agatha Christie

Without doubt, Agatha Christie is the Grande Dame of the mystery genre. Her works have been outsold by only The Bible and Shakespeare. She published 79 novels, a short story collection, 23 plays, and four non-fiction books. From the 1920s to the 1980s, 24 of her books and plays were made into movies.

Born September 1890, she lived to the age of 86, publishing books at a rapid pace. She was married to Archibald Christie in 1914, a marriage that would end 14 years later after the birth of one child. She later remarried to Sir Max Mallowan with whom she frequently traveled on archaeological expeditions. In 1971, she was awarded the Order of Dame Commander of the British Empire, Britain's highest honor. She died in 1976.

Christie's life was not without its own mysteries. In December of 1926, Christie disappeared for ten days. She was found at a hotel and she said she was suffering from amnesia brought on by multiple tragedies. People continue to argue about exactly what happened during these days.
