Christopher Buckley

Christopher Buckley was only 24 years old when he was named managing editor of Esquire. He is now editor of Forbes FYI, the quarterly supplement that alone makes a subscription to that magazine a worthy purchase. Buckley is also a prankster, who in 1991, sent out a mock press release announcing that cash-strapped Russia was planning to auction Lenin's embalmed body. Virtually every news organization ignored the release except ABC News, who ran with it on Peter Jennings' newscast, touching off a brief firestorm of controversy.

Buckley's serious side includes a stint as a speechwriter for George Bush. He nonetheless told C-Span's Brian Lamb in a 1997 interview that the job "was a chance to ride in Air Force Two." In the same interview, he expressed relief that while he and Bush spent some together, they never went skydiving and concluded by calling the whole experience "mind-numbing".

With the perfect pedigree and background, Buckley's satirical novels about the surreal elements of life in Washington ring with authenticity and are a joy to read.
