Marion Zimmer Bradley

For many writers, Marion Zimmer Bradley was both mentor and publisher. An accomplished writer of science fiction and fantasy, Marion Zimmer Bradley founded her own magazine in which she was known for giving good advice to new writers as well as publishing stories with strong female characters. The Marion Zimmer Bradley FANTASY Magazine ran for 50 years, ending publication a year after her death.

Bradley created many well-known fantasy worlds including Darkover, Sword and Sorceress, and the Avalon series. Though she was nominated three times, Bradley never won either a Hugo nor a Nebula. She was, though, recognized for lifetime achievement by the World Fantasy Award in 2000.

Born in New York in 1930, Bradley earned a Bachelor's from Hardon Simmons University at age 34. Throughout her grade school years, Bradley wrote stories for school newspapers and fanzines. At age 22, she sold her first short story.

Bradley died in 1999.
