Judy Blume
Though parents cringed at her frank content, Judy Blume was the author that helped many an adolescent girl through the teenage years with her pre-teen and young adult novels. Born in New Jersey in 1938, Blume said that growing up she wanted to be a "cowgirl, a detective, a spy, a great actress, or a ballerina." Being a writer never made her list. She didn't begin writing until her two children entered pre-school.
Her fame came from honestly and frankly addressing topics that were near to the heart of teenagers in books that were interesting and enjoyable to read. She tackled such issues as masturbation, divorce, menstruation, religion, and deciding to have sex. She also has successfully written books for both the younger set and for adults.
