Alfred Bester
In 1953, Alfred Bester won the first Hugo for a science fiction novel for
his book, The Demolished Man.
More than 30 years afterward-and a year after his death-he would become a Grand Master of Science Fiction as recognized by the Science Fiction Writers of America.
Bester was born in New York in 1913 and pursued degrees in humanities and psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote science fiction short stories before moving on to comics. He wrote for such titles as Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, and Green Lantern. He also wrote science fiction and adventure scripts for radio and television.
In the 50s, he began writing science fiction again earning recognition for his innovative style. His most famous and acclaimed work was produced during this period before he again left science fiction to become a magazine writer and literary editor.
Bester died in 1987.
