Dave Barry

When people talk about modern American humorists, the conversation doesn't last long before Dave Barry's name comes up. For decades, the man's humor column has appeared in newspapers around the country. He's also written more than 25 books-many of them collections of his columns.

As a way of proving his sense of humor is as lively in person as on the page, he is also a member of the charity band, The Rock Bottom Remainders. It's a band of writers who claim that they play music as well as Metallica writes novels. It includes fellow writers Stephen King, Amy Tan, Scott Turow, Ridley Pearson, Mitch Albom, Matt Groening, James McBride, Roy Blount, Jr. Kathi Kamen Goldmark and Greg Iles.

Born in 1947, Barry has won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He was born in New York, the son of a Presbyterian minister. In an early foreshadowing of his career, Barry was elected class clown at Pleasantville High School and was in a student rock band, Federal Duck, at Haverford College where he earned an English degree.

His brand of humor was made into the CBS situation comedy, Dave's World, which ran for four seasons. His first novel was made into a movie starring Tim Allen, Rene Russo, and Patrick Warburton.
