Stephanie Barron--born Francine Stephanie Barron and writing also under the name Francine Mathews--has led an eclectic life that has included work as a CIA intelligence analyst, a full-time novelist, a journalist, and a mom. She is a graduate of Princeton and Stanford.

She began publishing novels in 1992. Her espionage and Nantucket mysteries are published under the name Francine Mathews and her Jane Austen novels are written as Stephanie Barron.

Barron/Mathews first began writing novels because she wanted to be her own boss, to escape from the early and long days that she was putting in at the CIA. Her first outing was a mystery novel, followed not long after by her line of espionage novels, novels that feature "The Babe Who Came in From the Cold" of the men's club which are espionage novels.
