Kate Atkinson
Kate Atkinson has a deep love for literature.
Born in York in 1951, she was a head girl at private school before going on to Queen Anne Grammar school. She studied English Literature at Dundee University, eventually writing her doctoral thesis on American Literature.
Kate Atkinson then began writing short stories for magazines and garnering immediate critical attention.
In 1986 she won a Woman's Own Short Story Competition and followed that up with several other short story awards. Then in 1995, her first novel beat out Salman Rushdie and Roy Jenkins to win the Whitbread Book of the Year. It's an award she would again be shortlisted for in 2004.
Her first novel has had radio, theater, and television adaptations. Kate Atkinson has also written plays for a theatre in Edinburgh where she currently lives.
