Clifford Ashley

An author, sailor, photographer, and artist, Clifford Warren Ashley earned reknown for his maritime pictures and his extensive reference manual giving directions and illustrations of thousands of knots such as the one pictured below.

Born in 1881 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he spent most of his life in that state-except when he was at sea.

Ashley studied at Boston's Eric Pape School, rubbing elbows with such other artists as N.C. Wyeth, Sidney Chase, Henry Peck, and Howard Pyle. His artwork and articles appeared in such publications as Harpers, Scribner's Monthly Magazine, Collier's, and Success.

He worked out of an art studio, though he also conducted trade in mahogany furniture between Jamaica and Rhode Island.

In 1932, he married and settled down in Westport where he had two daughters and would die in 1947.
