Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou has been hailed as a modern-day Renaissance writer. She's been a writer, poet, teacher, historian, actress, playwright, civil rights activist, producer, and director. She's fluent in six different languages including Arabic, West African Fanti, Italian, French, and Spanish.

Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up in Arkansas and California. She has written autobiographies, poetry, screenplays, novels, and plays.

As an actress, she has appeared in such productions as Porgy and Bess, Calypso, The Blacks, Mother Courage, Medea, Look Away, Roots, How to Make an American Quilt, and Down in the Delta.

Other accomplishments include enshrinement in the National Woman's Hall of Fame, various academic positions, political appointments and a Grammy Award.
