Hans Christian Anderson
Hans Christian Anderson stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the Brothers Grimm as the giants who have provided us with the fairy tales that shaped our childhood, literature, and motion picture entertainment. Anderson lived from 1805 to 1875. After his father's death, he went to Copenhagen hoping to make his living on the stage. Instead, he became Denmark's most famous and beloved author.

Hans Christian Anderson wrote more than 190 stories. In addition to his famed fairy tales, he wrote travel essays, adult novels, poems and scripts (including libretti for operas). Though born in very poor circumstances to a shoemaker and a washerwoman, he went on to become a frequent guest in palaces, mansions, and of the wealthy elite.
