Lloyd Alexander

"Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it."

So said Lloyd Alexander, author of nearly 40 books. Best-known for his beloved Prydain series, Alexander was born January 30, 1924. Like many children's authors, Alexander struggled in school and did rather poorly.

Upon returning to the United States, Alexander worked for a small magazine doing such myriad jobs as associate editor, cartoonist, advertising, copywriter, and layout artist. He then spent ten years writing for adults before finally starting to write for children in 1963.

Writing for children was "the most creative and liberating experience of my life. In books for young people, I was able to express my own deepest feelings far more than I could ever do in writing for adults." He has enjoyed incredible success as a children's writer, hailed around the world as a master storyteller.

Alexander's awards include the Newbery Medal, the American Book Award and the Pennsylvania Book Lifetime Acheivement Award.

Lloyd Alexander died May 17, 2007, two weeks after the death of his wife of 61 years.
