Mitch Albom
Mitch Albom first won a cadre of faithful readers through his years of writing sports columns for the Detroit
Free Press. Often hailed as being among the best of the best sports columnists (the Associated Press named him the top sports columnist 13 times), his column is nationally syndicated as is the radio show he hosts.
His book, Tuesdays With Morrie, was on the New York Times bestseller list for four years and was made into a television movie starring Jack Lemmon and Hank Azaria, both of whom won Emmy Awards for it.
In addition to his sports columns, the Michigan resident has written several books. He's also a published songwriter and lyricist. He has founded two charities in the Detroit area, "The Dream Fund" which helps disadvantaged children become involved in the arts; and "A Time to Help" which performs projects in Detroit with such groups as Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.
Albom wasn't always a writer. Although he earned journalism and business administration degrees from Brandeis University and Columbia University, he spent time as an amateur boxer and a nightclub singer and pianist.
He is a member of the band Rock Bottom Remainders along with fellow writers Dave Barry, Stephen King, Amy Tan, Kathi Kamen Goldmark, Ridley Pearson, Scott Turow, Joel Selvin, James McBride, Roy Blount Jr., Barbara Kingsolver, Robert Fulghum, Matt Groening, Tad Bartimus, and Greg Iles.
